Radio Scanner on a Commercial Plane
If you plan to carry a radio scanner on a commercial plane, chances are you will not be questioned. However, few airlines will allow you to use it when onboard. Majority of airlines will let you use it after you land. But it is unlikely that you will be questioned for carrying it.
Using Radio Scanners on Aircraft
If you really want to use the scanner, you can use earphones. The quality of reception may vary though. At 36,000 feet, a decent scanner should be able to pick half the states in the US. With some scanners, it may be difficult to pick up anything.
The best time to use the radio scanner on a commercial plane is when the aircraft has leveled off. When you are permitted to take the seatbelts off, you can turn the device on. Again, you should use the headphones.
Why is Radio Scanner Use Prohibited on Many Airlines?
Reasons vary as to why airlines frown on the use of radio scanners. Some don’t allow it for security reasons. Another reason is that it may interfere with pilot communications. Many scanner users say the “interference with pilot instruments” is a myth.
However, there are those who believe that it is possible. For example, some scanners that use Local Oscillator circuits generate RF frequencies. This can happen even if they are passive receivers. If the Local Oscillator is not properly shielded, the RF will end up in the air.
A strong enough RF has the potential to interrupt aircraft electronic systems. The above scenario is likely to happen if the scanner is in the cockpit.
Scanners and Laptops
It should be stated that a scanner is not the only possible source of RF energy leaks. However, laptops are allowed in many airlines. This is probably because a lot of people have to use them.
Other information about Scanner use on Aircraft
Most, if not all airlines will not allow scanners to be used if the plane is below 10,000 feet. At this point it is possible for the device to interfere with the flight navigation controls. It is also worth noting that a metal body makes it difficult to hear anything.
Some high quality scanners can pick up signals though.
The bottom line is this. There is nothing illegal about carrying a radio scanner on a commercial plane. But unless the airline specifically allows the use of the device, do not turn it on.
