Scanner Radio Frequencies

Scanner radio frequencies are numerous, and so scanners arrange them into clusters that group similar broadcasts together. The way the frequencies are organized by the scanners and the frequency the unit can pick up can vary a bit though. Below are some of the better known radio bands and their frequency range.

Citizens Band

The citizen’s band or CB has a frequency range of 26.965 MHz to 27.400 MHz. This has been recognized by the FCC since 1945 and remains in use today. This band is strictly for the use of citizens’ communications. They are typically used at short distances.

Amateur Radio

The range is from 50.000 MHz to 54.000 MHz and 144.000 MHz to 148.000 MHz. Also called ham radio, these scanner radio frequencies are set aside for people who utilize radio as a hobby. In some ways it is similar to the citizen’s band. However, the biggest difference is that each ham radio operator has to get a license from the FCC.

Aircraft

Set in the range of 108.00 MHz to 136.00 MHz, these are reserved for use by commercial and private aviation. When tuned into these frequencies, one will hear the communications between the air traffic controller and the pilot. The pilot’s communications with the airport tower will also be heard.

TV Broadcasts

The range is 470.0 MHz to 805.75 MHz and 54.0 MHz to 88.0 MHz. The TV audio is relayed on another frequency other than video. This permits a listener to tune in to local TV audio. To hear TV audio however, the frequencies must be exact.

Maritime

The maritime frequency range is 156.050 MHz to 161.925 MHz. They are employed by ships and boats that are confined to US waters. These are also used to make contact with US Coast Guard. Maritime vessels also use it to communicate with each other.

Police

The range is from 154.650 MHz to 156.000 MHz. This range is restricted to official government communications. Those who use this band include state police agencies, city and county services. Other emergency services use these frequencies too.

You can also use the scan feature to look for scanner radio frequencies. Many frequencies are unlisted, and you can only discover them by scanning or doing a search with the unit.
